“At the beginning I was pretty disappointed,” she says. If something were wrong with their brains, it would provide an easy explanation for the evil they had done. But after studying more than 600 combatants, she has begun to grasp the complexity of their experiences. “I realized not all of them are sociopaths. I realized most of them are also victims.”
