Dementia in Latin America: Assesing the present and envisioning the future

Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACs) constitute a region of incredible exquisiteness, heterogeneity and cultural crossbreeding. It is also a region which faces vast tensions for human development. Neurodegenerative diseases in this region are not an exception. LACs possess some of the world’s largest genetic population of multiple dementia subtypes. Unsuitable diagnostic procedures, alongside with limited training, low awareness, lack of basic support, stigmas, language barriers, and low socioeconomic levels trigger huge dementia inequalities.

Study reveals that institutionalized young people have a deficit in soft cognitive abilities

This is the case of institutionalized children, like those of Sename or those who have spent time in jail. A study of the Center of Neurosciences of the School of Psychology of the Adolfo Ibáñez University showed that although many of these children obtained relatively normal performances in the «executive functions» such as intelligence, work memory or attention, those that represent cognitive aspects more «Cold», was in the softer aspects where they presented deficits.

Specifically, the research focused on analyzing the moral judgment of these young people by studying how capable they were of recognizing the «intentionality of acts» in other people.
